A self-proclaimed godman, Vinod Kashyap, has been arrested in Delhi for sexually assaulting several female devotees and blackmailing and threatening them into remaining silent. He is accused of subjecting several of his devotees to sexual assault at his ashram in a Dwarka village and extorting money from them. The victims were allegedly threatened with dire consequences if they spoke out against him. Kashyap is not the first self-proclaimed godman to be arrested for such crimes in India. In January 2023, a special court in India sentenced another self-styled godman to 14 years of imprisonment after finding him guilty of raping more than 100 women. In September 2023, a policeman-turned-godman was arrested in Mumbai for multiple rape, extortion, and cheating allegations. The Indian government has been cracking down on such godmen who exploit their followers for personal gain and commit heinous crimes against them.
